This is one of my favourite outfits from our recent shoots. I named this outfit “The Trendy Freshman” because everyone wants to make that bold statement on their first day back to school. Your outfit gives you a sense of identity and how you want to be recognized. With the new school year approaching, it doesn’t hurt to do a little pre-planning for the upcoming day (I know you’re dying to buy some new clothes for the new year!).
So are a few tips and tricks to think about when planning your Back-to-School outfit!
When you think of September, you think of: School, school, and more school. I’m kidding. Weather plays a huge role this month; it’s that kind of month where we know it’s not summer anymore, yet we still want to dress like we’re heading out to a day at the beach. But when you’re living in Toronto, that cold weather can creep up behind you and go from plus 30, to plus 15 within a night!
Let’s start off with the top part of the outfit: a long sleeve grey top is just what you need to transition yourself from those bright summer colours, to the deep earthy tones of autumn. Long sleeves are a timeless piece that can make your outfit look classic, or more fashion-forward
(depending on the direction you want to go in). Aside from solely being a fashionable piece to your outfit, they’re practical enough to protect you from the chilly winds of autumn and make you look and feel more comfortable.
Another reason why I chose this long sleeve top is because of its neutral colour. Neutral colours have been an ongoing trend from the summer time that will definitely move into the autumn season. Neutral colours are based off of the colours: black, white, and different shades of brown. These colours have the advantage to easily be paired with all colours and create effective colour combinations.
To complete the top part of the outfit, I layered a denim jacket to his outfit to give him a more laid-back look.
As the summer weather slowly comes to an end, it’s time to take on the cold winds of the autumn season. And what better way to celebrate the autumn season than with flannel shirts! Add some texture to our outfit by tying a flannel shirt around your waist. Yes, we’re bring this style back from the 90s as an inspiration for this outfit!
Denim Jackets? Tied flannel shirts around the waist? I might as well call this look the ‘Modernized 90s Kid‘!
Now let’s move onto the bottom: When you think of cargo pants, what do you think of? A lot of people would cringe at the thought of loose fitting cargo pants as part of their wardrobe, myself included. But these aren’t your typical “Kim Possible-styled cargo pants,” these cargo joggers have a more tapered silhouette! It fits loosely around the thighs and tapers itself through the calves for a more fitted look. For men, you can find these cargo pants at Forever21 Men, H&M, ZARA or TopMan, and for women, you can find stylish cargo pants at Aritzia, Forever21 or TopShop.
Lastly, we styled him out with grey runners to complete the look. Neutral coloured shoes are still an on-going trend from the summer and will undoubtedly continue onto the autumn season. You can never go wrong with any black, white or grey shoes since it can easily be paired with any outfit.
